Pretty disappointing...

If you're a fan of characters that spontaneously break into song whenever the writers can't think of a way to keep a very thin story moving along then this movie is for you! I, however, stopped enjoying the whole break-into-a-classic-60's / 70's / 80's-song thing after Top Gun when I was 12. I can take it once or twice, judiciously implemented like in the original Shrek, but when it just keeps coming behind every forced turn in this movie, it starts to make me very grouchy. I start wondering if the writers just weren't that inspired with the story or if some executive got the bright idea that doing this at every 15 minute interval would help sell the soundtrack if the movie tanked. I'm leaning toward the latter after already seeing the soundtrack displayed prominently in stores.
Frankly, as a big fan of recent Disney and Disney / Pixar collaborations, I was really disappointed . Overall, the movie was pretty trite and contrived. Parts felt like lifeless imitations of better movies, and it was hard not to notice the parallels to "Finding Nemo", but without the heart and humor. My 3 year-old seemed OK with it, but I was bored stiff and guessing by the few laughs from the others in the theater, I don't think I was alone. |
