While "Ice Princess" is a formula movie, it isn't a typical formula movie. It breaks alot of rules.
The evil villain isn't so evil after all (sometimes she's the good-guy), the mom isn't supportive of her daughter (sometimes she's the villain). The perfect skater/friend isn't a witch out to hurt a friend who has become a rival, the boyfriend isn't a jock and she's not panting after some "handsome prince" who turns out to be a frog. And best of all, she doesn't come home with the gold medal. Or the silver. Or even the bronze.
I liked the way the mom and the coach were opposite sides of the same coin.
Mom is a feminist, a bitter divorced woman who wants to force her daughter into the mold of her own dreams, independant and never catering to men. Clothes are not trendy or even brightly colored. Skimpy skaters outfits are unacceptable. They depict the soft side of femininity, which she wants to hide in her daughter. Her daughter must be hard and ready to take on the world like a man. The whole world revolves around Harvard and science. Her daughter's wishes don't matter. She wants her daughter to be what she could have been.
Coach is a skater who missed out on her dream, and pushes her own daughter to become what she missed out on. Her daughter just wants a normal life, and would rather be in math class or going out with a boyfriend than practicing AGAIN.
This movie is all about compromise and about letting kids be themselves, not little copies of their parents. It's about shades of grey. The world isn't black and white and sometimes success doesn't equal winning the big prize. |
