8 bucks that is...
Let me start by saying that I have not seen the original, so the only thing I have to go on is the movie I just witnessed.
Assault on Precinct 13 is one of those movies that asks you to suspend reality. Aside from that, and if you are only there to witness the action movie for what it is, then you have definitely chosen the right movie.
The movie is about Jake Roenick (Ethan Hawke), who is a cop that is trying to get over his inner demons after a drug bust goes bad and his team gets killed. Roenick blames himself for their deaths, and finds himself behind a desk so he never has to make critical decsions for any fellow cops in the future.
The story picks up on New Years Eve with Roenick and two others, fellow cop Jasper O'Shea (Brian Dennehy) and the flirtacious secretary with an appetite for bad boys, Iris Ferry (Drea de Matteo). They are scheduled to hold down the fort that is Precinct 13 for the last night of operation. Little do they know that they will have more to do than just pack up the old evidence room. Enter Marion Bishop.
Bishop (Lawrence Fishburne) is a cop killer that is on trial and is sentenced to stay in jail for two days until the trial starts. While on the prison transfer bus, a huge snowstorm diverts Bishop and 3 other convicts to Precinct 13 until the morning. Not too long after the convicts are redirected, Precinct 13 is ambushed by other cops that want Bishop dead, and they will stop at nothing until they complete the task no matter who gets in the way.
Roenick has to rid himself of his inner demons and come to be the cop he once was if he and his men want to come out alive. He does the math and figures that more people in his army are key to his survival, so he arms his convicts. Together, they still don't have favorable percentages to fight against angry cops that want Bishop dead, but can they even survive themselves?
This movie has non-stop action and great acting. Like I said, you may have to suspend belief, but going in expecting nothing but a shoot em up, good cop vs bad cop vs convicts will make you a very happy viewer when you leave. I would relate this movie to the likes of Training Day, S.W.A.T., Die Hard, and The Recruit. Both Hawke and Fishburne provide great performances in their respective roles. |
