"Assault on Precinct 13" has the burden of trying to outdo it's original version, a classic film made by an accomplished director John Carpenter only 30 years ago. But French director Jean-Francois Richet does a nice job of adapting his own movie off of the original screenplay based on a few new plot twists and strong acting performances out of Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne.
Ethan Hawke gives a solid portrayal of Jake Roenick, a cop who is still battling his own demons after being responsible for the death of two fellow cops only 8 months ago. Laurence Fishburne also shines in his role as the legendary gang leader Marion Bishop. Seemingly a strong, silent type for the first half of the movie, Fishburne finally shows off his fiery action acting skills while he unites with the cops who have imprisoned him. John Leguizamo should also not be overlooked in his role as Beck, another criminal who pesters Bishop through a good part of this movie.
Good acting, however, could not hold this movie at an outstanding level alone and that's where "Assault on Precinct 13" fails. Placed within the new plot twists where a few points that seemed a little confusing. First of them being a conviently placed tunnel near the end of the movie. Another being a forest in the middle of a downtown urban wasteland in the middle of Detroit, providing nice trees for the characters to hide behind. A little more thought to the setting would have benefitted this movie tremendously.
"Assault on Precinct 13" relied too heavily on a few good acting performances and an already familiar story to push it past mediocrity, but it does just that, it just didn't bring the movie to an outstanding or memorable level like the original. |
