Don Cheadle was outstanding in this movie and deserves an Oscar for his performance. I think the movie was put together very well and deserves at least a nomination for Best Picture. It was a great movie, but you don't want to go back and see it again because it's a true story about something so despicable.
The movie is an excellent historical document that reminds us genocide is real and it still happens today even with TV, newspapers, internet and other media available to report it. It shows just how bad things can get if no one will act, and when politics interferes with doing what is right.
The only complaint I have about the movie is that it let Bill Clinton off the hook and never mentioned his name nor outlined the details of his criminal efforts to keep the world ignorant about the Rwanda situation. For those who may not know, he ordered the State Department and all his cabinet members to NEVER use the word "genocide" when discussing Rwanda because acknowledgement of genocide meant that we were required by the UN Genocide Convention of 1948 to intervene. His orders to avoid use of the word "genocide" meant he was intentionally trying to keep the UN out of Rwanda. That is being complicent with Genocide.
To make matters worse, Clinton campaigned to get the skeleton UN Peacekeeping force (2,500) out of Rwanda. It took the pressure of neighboring African nations to get anyone else involved, and that happened only after 1,000,000 had already been hacked to death by machetes. Even then, all the neighboring countries asked for was to borrow 50 armored personnel carriers from the US to protect their troops and transport Tutsis out of danger. Clinton also refused to do this and demanded money just to use them. Without payment, he would not authorize their use and the APCs sat unused on a base in Germany.
Furthermore, he also refused to send over planes with radio jamming capabilities saying that it was "too expensive", which was proven to be an absurd claim and could have saved hundreds of thousands of lives. That's because the Hutus used radio broadcasts to call out other Hutus to attack Tutsis. That's where they got their orders.
Kofi Annan did his part in being the scumbag too, by avoiding the issue on the UN floor and refusing to report the truth to the UN Security Council.
I guess we shouldn't be surprised though. They basically did the same thing in the former Yugoslav Republics leading to the deaths of thousands of Croatians, Muslims and Kosovars.
This movie shows us that there are evildoers in the world, and that we must ALL be involved in helping fight genocide in all of its forms. It also shows us that good can be found everywhere. Don Cheadle's character was a Hutu, but he did everything he could to save the lives of Tutsis. |
