As an American living in China for the past 8 years, fluent in Mandarin Chinese, I have come to learn and love Chinese storytelling and the beauty of the language and history of the people who live here.

Translating this quality into good cinema has never been easy; all too often passed over for kung-fu moves or fraudulent "Oriental" themes and cinematics.

House of Flying Daggers brings one of China's greatest modern film directors into the limelight. Zhang Yi Mou is not a martial arts film director, but more of teller of truth in love, society and class within China's turbulent recent history.

This movie is simply visual art, dreams of worlds far away and of a time when life was meant to be lived; slowly, with deep conscientious thought, enjoyed, full of color and quality, but always with a sharp edge.

ZhangZiYi is great and her youth spent studying and perfecting dance are shown extremely well in this film. She really is that flexible and graceful. Her acting along with Andy Lau and Takeshi are strong and thorough throughout the film.

...And the daggers...well they really speak for themselves now don't they.

Go and see this film. And if you liked the movie, trust me get the soundtrack! Its fantastic.
