I just recently saw Spanglish, and thought it was an amazing movie. The acting was outstanding, as was the direction, and the story was well-developed and dealt with its topic very well, with just the right characters, including the endearing grandmother.
The majority of bad reviews on Yahoo were so because of a bad ending with no solution, but these viewers must not have put any thought into the movie at all. The purpose of movies like Spanglish isn't to have a simple problem with a direct solution, one that solves everything and makes everyone happy at the end. The movie's purpose instead was to look at the struggle of a Mexican woman in a wealthy American society where she knows nothing about the culture, and how she overcomes it. There's your problem and solution. The ending apparantly didn't satisfy everyone, but I can't understand that. Would it have been more satisfying if the daughter became synonymous with Americans, leaving her Mexican heritage behind? If Adam Sandler gave up in his marriage that easily to run off with the cleaning woman, without giving his wife a way to change her ways, not giving a thought to how it would affect his children? I, for one, would have been incredibly disappointed if Spanglish, a movie requiring a little bit of thought put into it after one leaves the theater, had a "Let*s wrap this movie up as quickly as possible and however we think will please the American audience the most" ending. |
