I loved this film. I won't go into the plot, as many of the reviewers have already done. But unlike a lot of the reviews I've read here, I really think first and foremost,it's a film about mothers and daughters, and about their expectations of eachother. The story delves into the relationships between Cloris Leachman and her daughter Tea Leoni, Tea Leoni and her daughter, and their housekeeper and her daughter. I can't even say it's strictly about parenting, because Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni have a son who doesn't come into the script much. All of these women have expectations of their daughters, and the daughters have expectations of their mothers. They all have an image of who they want their mothers and daughters to be, and how they want to be loved. The fact that the housekeeper is Mexican, and the whole immigrant issue is beside the point. The film shows that regardless of your race, nationality, or wealth, daughters are deeply affected by how their mothers relate to them....or not. They all live through eachother's lives, and the connections they share are deeply personal. The acting was beautiful in this film, and the story was sweet, and funny. Adam Sandler was really good, and took a back seat to the powerful performances of all of these women, including the children. He was subtle and sweet as a loving,non-judgemental father and extremely patient husband. The two little girls were wonderful in this film, especially Sandler & Leoni's daughter. You will leave this movie understanding these characters very personally, and knowing why they are the way they are. Oh, and bring a kleenex too. |
