With a unique blend of comedy and horror, Shaun of the Dead is on of the most original movies I have seen in quite a while. Convincing the audience that they should still be scared while they are laughing has to be an enormous challenge for the director -- and that's why he deserves so much praise.
Shaun of the Dead is a very funny movie. It's definitely more of a comedy than horror, but it's still tense enough that the humor does not diminish what is supposed to be scary.
What really makes this film great is the acting. It's possible that this cast of actors are familiar faces to the Brits, but other than Shaun's step-father (who was in Underworld), I have never seen any of them on TV or in movies. But for a cast of unknowns, they were grade A material -- all of them! All of the humor was sharp and witty and often the camera angles enhanced its effect.
As funny as Shaun of the Dead is, one of the most gruesome scenes I have ever seen has to be toward the end when *someone* gets pulled out of the window and the zombies rip his stomach open and feast on his guts while he's still alive. That was SO wrong -- but SO awesome! But it just goes to re-affirm that the film still wants you to keep in mind that these zombies mean serious business.
Don't be fooled by this "romantic comedy with zombies" nonsense. This is a dude-flick and unless your girl likes flesh-eating zombies and toilet humor, you might want to part ways and let her go see The President's Daughter while you go and enjoy the good movie. |
