Ah, "Shaun of the Dead". The trailer had me fooled. What I expected to be a laugh-out-loud horror comedy much like "Scary Movie", turned out to be a smarter, scarier, and more touching film than one would expect from the horror genre. It had suspense, action, emotional drama, comedy with slapstick that's more witty than brainless, romance that's not sickening but subtly sweet... and of course an unusual choice for a hero figure. There are plot clichés here and there, that's for sure, but those are easily overshadowed by the fine blend of genres in this movie.
The visuals were great. Very good camera work and scene transitions! I especially liked how the zombie epidemic was shown to spread. For example. The scene where Shaun and Ed were doing something in the foreground (singing/rapping/being drunk or something) while something strange would be happening in the background at the same time (good heavens, did that guy's head just come off?!). Or when Shaun would be walking to and from Nelson's grocery store... before the zombie virus struck, and after. Creepy!
I think it would have been fun to be one of those people acting as zombies in this movie. Except for getting bashed in the head that is.
This movie created main characters I could connect with, it had a plot that kept me hanging on till the last second. And unlike other horror movies that usually leave the viewer with a sense of dread or annoyance because the threat wasn't totally wiped out, the ending of "Shaun of the Dead" plays on that in a different light. I certainly didn't mind that I didn't laugh as much as I expected I would. I'm just glad I was able to see such a unique film. I hope there'll be more like it. :) |
