This movie is a showcase for everyone involved. Cameron Diaz really shows some talent, this is by far her best roll to date. Shirley McClaine I think could defnitely receive a Supporting Actress Oscar nod for her roll as Ella, the grandmother to Maggie(Diaz) and Rose(Toni Collette), who shows great strenth here as well. The movie starts out cutsy and flirty doing what Diaz does best. Then the movie transforms into something more which shows depth and a real connection between the two actresses. It just gets better when Maggie gets in contact with Ella(McClaine). Ella catches Maggie stealing and being the conniving manipulative woman that she is. But she grows as an individual and it transforms Ella and Rose in ways not thought possible. The movie is text book for a directors work. Curtis Hanson could also be in Oscar contention for Directing. Bottom line, the movie draws you in right from the get-go and never lets go. A must see for guys and girls alike. |
