Color me impressed! I was expecting to see a UPN calibre movie and instead got some of the best dialogue, plot and acting in a Science fiction movie since...well,let's just say it's been a LOOOOONG time.
The story follows a band of former rebels turned Han Solo-esque smugglers who go from planet to planet in their junkheap spaceship. The band of rogues itself is made up of two former war buddies, a mercenary named Jayne, a preacher, a "Companion" (fancy word for hooker), a milk fed farmgirl mechanic, a preacher, and two fugitives from the law. One is a doctor, the other is a crazed yet psychic killing machine in the form of a 17 year old girl named River.
The story is about River, and quickly explains the root of the characters, how they came to get to know each other, and resolves their run from the law in a fairly fast amount of time.
The movie is in essence a continuation of the tv series Firefly, which was cancelled after the first season.
Fans of the series will be the ones who find the most satisfaction out of this space faring western, but fans of science fiction in general, fans of snappy dialogue (gilmore girls fans, I am looking in your direction) and fans of westerns will love this new take on what had been two previously overused concepts.
The movie is almost completely stolen by the British actor who plays their nemesis. His non challance plays so well against the western wit of Nasthan Fillion, who plays the ship's captain.
So please, give Jessica Alba's swimwear a rest and check out Serenity, you'll be glad you did. |
