It is not a hollywood story. It is a story about different people forced into war (WWI) in France. About what their lives were before they got drafted, what they lost, what they went through, about what happened to the ones left behind, and how they had to adjust.

It's mainly a story of hope. Hope we try to find in everyday daily things: "If I can outrun the car to the turn on the road, Manech will come back alive from the war".
It's little beliefs like these we play on ourselves that sustains our hope, love, belief and faith.

It's the story of a young 17 year old fiancee (Audrey Tautou) who does not believed her beloved 18 year old Manech died in 1917, and her search in 1920 for him.

As in Amelie, her own search will mixed itself with others, sometimes bringing peace to some, othes regret. It is a very HUMANE film. Not trying to dictate ations but more narrating people's lives. Without judgmenting.
Even as the spectators, you feel sometimes a desire to judge, but it is stripped away from you. Instead, you bath in their lives and understand why and how each person arrived where they were at the end of the movie. You might feel sad for some, but again, you feel incapable of judging any of the characters.
It's a beautiful story, with lots of emotions.

EXTRA: Jodie Foster speaks so well in French, it was a delicacy to hear her speak. She does not possess a single american accent in her French, amazing. I'm a French living in the US for about the last ten years, and I've been trying to rid my accent, and although I've improved, it's one of the hardest thing to do. Chapeau Bas!!!

Also at the end, people stayed way longer sitting in the theater. It seems people could not move away from their seats. For some briefs minutes, I think we all felt part of the movie, and were learning to accept and believe that Life does not make what you make of, but you make what life is about with choices, decisions and etc...
So of course, we had to sit a bit longer and ponder a while!

I will not take young kids to see this movie since it graphically shows war. Sex scenes are nothing very offensive but well done. But some are different, and you can feel the sweetness, the loving, or passion or just the sex. So they are very well done too. They will aslo define some of the characters.
