We have a man who kidnaps worthy victims, and puts them in bizarre situations in which they have to make life/death decisions in relatively short periods of time.
Sounds like a recipe for some suspensful, horrific cinema. That's certainly what the theatrical trailer, and 2 teasers leads you to believe at least. But was the ever so dreaded crime committed here of "trailer deceiving"? Yes and no...
The premise has little short of a remarkable delivery. We find Adam and Dr. Gordon who wake up chained to opposite walls of a musty bathroom that looks like its been abandoned for years. And quickly you will find yourself getting involved wanting to know more. It's fun watching them slowly try to figure out their predicament.
As the film rolls along we get taken into a few more puzzles, with new unlucky victims. But for the most part we just get to see them temporarily. If you've seen the "Razor Wire" and "Helmet" teasers don't expect to see a whole lot more. The movie doesn't take you any further down those paths.
In other words, "Saw" revolves around the rundown bathroom. Which isn't so bad. The scenery looks really good. The problem comes in when Adam and Dr. Gordon start to lose their tempers with the situation. It would have worked out well if their acting skills had good execution in this field, but I am afraid I have some bad news... they BOTH couldn't quite pull it off. And it very unfortunately led to to me rolling my eyes on several occasions for the last say 20-25 minutes.
The movie had some good stuff in it, but I would be lying if I said I was not moderately disappointed. I wanted it to be better. A LOT better. |
