I saw this film on New Years Day - I loved every minute of it. As a matter of fact, it was the only thing I wanted from my husband for our 26th wedding anniversary. First, I must be truthful -to me Darin is one of the best entertainers of his time and I am 100% certain had he lived he would have been bigger than Sinatra, etc.
Using both Bobby Darin as the adult and a child at the same time to tell the story was pretty ingenius. The fact that Darin had rheumatic fever as a child and was able to push himself as hard as he did was a miracle. I was born in 1951 and had rheumatic fever when I was 6 which forced me to stay in bed for an entire year. I had to make concessions and had valve damage; fortunately, I healed and have been able to lead a normal life - hence, the beginning of the movie was extremely emotional knowing what odds he was given (and what could have been for me)
Spacey did fantastic singing Darin's songs. Parks did Jolson, Foxx did Ray, but it takes real guts, hard work and dedication to perform the entire person - not just the walking and talking, but the singing - the thing that made him great.
Spacey's age did not bother me either. This was a movie - some imagination had to be used that it was actually Darin on the screen - - and sometimes it was almost hard to remember that it wasn't Darin.
I will definitely buy this movie the minute it comes out on DVD and I can assure you it will be watched more than once.
