Can one make a compelling film about the origin of an historic advance in mathematics? We all know the answer to be "yes", but the proof is not in this film.
This was a disappointment for me, as I am one of Paltrow's many admirers.
The film kept us at arm's length both intellectually and emotionally.
The Director's attempt to present the story so as to parallel the confused state of the lead characters' minds was not successful.
What's worse, it was difficult to really care much about the characters.
Since the two leads are -- or we suspect are -- somewhat mad -- not connecting with them is understandable. However, the flaws of all of the characters were front and center and we found ourselves either put off by them, or at least not very interested.
The "proof" itself gained weight so late in the story that, while it was interesting, it was not the kind of compelling element that might otherwise have driven the story.
Too bad.
Paltrow is still often good to look at, despite her deliberately worn appearance. That's something. |
