Here's a rarity: a slam-bang pulp thriller on the surface that is actually one of the most philsophical and deeply questioning movies in recent years. The first time, you'll be gob-smacked (as they say in England) as Oh Dae-su charges a corridorful of angry thugs in search of why he was locked up for 15 years with no explanation. The second time, you'll realize that everything you've been seeing is all part of a larger plan. Under the violence, the rage, the amazing imagery and one of the most integral soundtracks, there's a story about looking for answers to unanswerable questions. Is ignorance a sin? Do you want revenge or the truth? How can you be sure what hardly matters to you may be the world to someone else? (See it at least twice -- and the second time, turn around and look at the audience's faces when Dae-su opens that photo album....) |
