A DAY WITHOUT A MEXICAN has good intentions and a good idea as its driving force. The problem is when talking about Latinos, there are just too many messages/ideas to cover. This movie did a good job trying to cover all the messages, but failed to give one strong message (every good message has to be super analyzed, and people do not take that much time). There are interesting facts within the movie that question your own stereotypes, the problem is that many were nothing more than stereotypes ( and no real moment of learning). Some scenes seem to have a lot attention, but it is not clear WHY they are there in the first place (like the affair with the latino musician's wife and the next door neighbor...what is the point???)
In terms of the professionals, they were mentioned. When the governor became governor, its because many of the Mexicans/Latinos dissapeared, also the people that worked in the television station (weatherman), the musician and others...all in all I feel that they actually represeted professions well (not great, but well). If you think of it as a ratio: there is probably a 1 to 10 (not real stat...only an idea) ratio when comparing a professional to that of a farm worker, but even the farmworker came across as really important position (which is a very crucial point, because it give much value to the farmworkers). Its not offensive its actually true. As well, that without Latinos (mexicans, cubans, guatemalans...etc) California would not function, which is also true. This comes to show you, that you actually have more power than you might think (as a Latino). So instead of dissing the movie because it is no good, or it did not show what YOU wanted to see. Think about what it is trying to tell you with all the stereotypes, because it is the after effect that is important (you know, your reaction). Now think about those reactions, and pick the one you need to learn about. Then ACT on what you would like to change...make it happen!
Also remember that a DAY WITHOUT A MEXICAN is not meant to purposely umbrella all Latino's (Mexican, Cuban, Salvadorian...etc) instead its a prepetuated stereotype, and they are taking it and making you think about it or checking those who believe all Latino's are from MEXICO (to educated the viewers that think that). Remember that it is unity that makes us powerful, that is why when everyone dissapeared, California was helpless, because together we really make a great impact. And it is together that we can make a change. |
