First off, this movie is not for everyone. I repeat, it is not for everyone. The viewing I attended was 90% men and boys. This movie is brutally violent with body parts going everywhere in comic book fashion. It is filmed in black and white with the occasional color added on the women or for blood or whatever. Also, there really is nothing positive about this movie - very few redeemable characters if any. The women are all hookers that are scantilly clad. There is only one sex scene that shows a women topless while having intercourse.
In terms of the violence, there are many gruesome images, namely decapitations (numerous), animals eating bodies, and other body parts flying. People get shot numerous times and don't die. People jump off of buildings and somehow manage to live - yes, it is a comic book. Even the car chases have a comic book feel.
Ladies.....you have your chick flicks, this is most definitely a GUY FLICK. Some of the women are as tough as the men - namely some Asian chick named Mehoe. So if you enjoy women getting their just due in the world of violence, then you might like this.
I did like the Pulp Fiction-style storyline that tied most of it together. And the mystery-plotlines were comic-bookish, but they still made it interesting enough. The gruesomeness of it reminded you of "Silence of the Lambs"/"Pulp Fiction". And the style of photography was interesting enough to make you appreciate it.
The acting was somewhat boring to me. Alot of the lines were said without inflection. The constant narration was like a "Mike Hammer" episode. But hey, it's an adult comic book. I would give a nods up to Mickey Rourke's performance. He didn't even quite look like himself. The list of good, but not great, actors in this movie was impressive. Looking at Jessica Alba was worth the ticket of admission. She is very pretty and sexy. But hey, I'm a guy! Carla Gugino was pretty hot too. I enjoyed Benicio's performance, too.....but he's always very good.
I liked it. It wasn't great. I think because it was unique and interesting that it got my attention. I never got bored, although I didn't care much about anybody.
Again, not for everybody and most likely not for chicks. If you go with your boyfriend, don't expect much for you, but he'll probably love it. Guys are into this kind of whacked out movie.
