Having read a number of reviews bashing this film, I have to say that all of them are a bit misleading. Almost every review compliments to the visuals, but criticizes the acting, the story, the portrayal of women, and the nudity and violence which I suppose will always be criticized. I'll try to address these points without ruining too much.

First of all, the point of the violence and nudity is a mirror of the corruption of the city. The story is about three characters, each of whom is trying to do what is right in a city that is corrupt, and the lines get blurred when there is so much wrong in the world. Bruce Willis trying to rescue an 11-year-old girl has no choice but to use violence in order to protect her, because otherwise she is going to be killed and raped.

Second of all, the portrayal of women is exaggerated intentionally. I doubt miller or rodriguez would say that this is how women are supposed to be treated or how women actually act in society, but it is obviously playing off of 'the princess who needs rescuing', 'damsel in distress' motiff. That's kind of the point.

Third, the acting is exaggerated intentionally for effect. It's done very well in the context of the world that you're in.

Fourth, the story is remarkable. The whole point of it is how one person's struggle (or in this case, three) against an overwhelmingly strong grip that one family has on a city can be broken: the right thing can be done in the end. sick, twisted people can be brought to a sort of justice in the end even in a place where it's supposed to be impossible. whatever you do will eventually catch up to you, no matter how powerful you are or who you know.

So, I am sorry for those who find it challenging to watch this amount of violence and nudity which is, admittedly, grotesque, and for those who couldn't look at the movie on a deeper level other than "the acting is bad" or "this movie is sexist", etc. But, it really is a great film.
