Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest stars Johnny Depp as the wonderfully audacios Captain Jack Sparrow, Keira Knightly, Orlando Bloom and Bill Nighy (who's perfect as Davy Jones). This time around Keira and Orlando (Elizabeth and Will) have been arrested on their wedding day for saving Jack Sparrow's life. This random dude, Lord something who pops out of no where, says that Will has to get a compass from Jack blah blah blah, Elizabeth holds a gun to the Lord guy and gets him to sign some papers and then she jumps on a ship blah blah blah. I'm not gunna lie to you. I have absolutely no clue what went on wihin the first 20 minutes but it all makes for an entertaining set up.
Here I would continue to type more about the plot, but quite frankly, in my opinion its a mess. The story was so muddled, half the time I wasn't sure what was going on, and the other half I wasn't even sure if there was a story being told. There's some stuff with owing souls, and Will's father, but quite frankly its just such a disaster that its very hard to actually care. That's really my only complaint with this movie, it has absolutely nothing to say but it takes 2 1/2 hours to say it all.
But despite the absence of story and, plot-wise, being a complete train wreck this film is actually worth seeing for some breath-taking and exciitng action sequences, including more than one haunting battle with a large sea creature, and one exhilarting sequence on a spinning water mill. There's a couple of funny jokes, and it's all worth it to see Johnny as Jack Sparrow. And there's a cliff hanger of an ending taht will leave you dying for Pirates 3 (even if you didn't like this one)
Is this a bad movie? No, its not. I do recommend that you go out and see it. The problem with it is that it just doesn't deliver all of the thrills, laughs and rollicking entertainment taht you think it will. It's too hung up on being as great as the first one, and being a huge summer blockbuster to actually care about good filmmaking. It gets to lost in itself. You're going to leave the theatre having had a good time, but your left with a some what hollow feeling.
Overall, this is one worth seeing. You'll be entertained, and in a summer film what more can you ask for? Although it doesnt live up to its hype, or to the standard set by the first one, and you will be slightly disappointed, it's still one I recommend you see. Barely, though. Just barely.
6.75/10
I gave it a 6.75 becuase 6.5 seemed too low, and 7 semmed too high, and 6.75 is right smack in the middle, just in case you were wondering. |
