Can Paris look better-No

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy have created a stunning experience which is only flawed by being too short to savor fully.
Writing movies has lately been about a lot of action. But the action here is all about unfolding what's inside two people's heads. First there is the usual-how are you, fine. But these people have history, a brief meeting a decade ago. Delpy does more than act, she reminds us of all the great dialogue in movies-My Dinner With Andre-but this is conversation about the meaning of life between two people who have a past, and perhaps a future. Hawke is once again the deer in the headlights of Delpy's character-how could one ever resist, much less leave, this woman? A movie so self-referential could be a problem, but not here, because the movie succeeds in creating its own moment in time, while evoking both memory and anticipation. The movie succeeds at both, and reminds us of the mystery of chemistry and the agony of loss. And Paris-Paris is for lovers.
This film could be seen again and again, like Casablanca, because it is about an eternal connection, like a big bang that created an internal, eternal universe for the characters. |
