I could not help but notice when I was in the theater that there were people who would come in, sit for a few moments, then leave, shaking their heads and snorting in disgust. At first I was a little naive on it, then I realized that they were upset about this movie being completely in French. That's too bad- for those people that left.

There are movies that come along and weave a tapestry of character, conflict and environment all around the viewer in a way that is comforting and entertaining. I mean those movies of old, the ones that have characters that are worth looking at, that have places that you want to see, that have conflicts that you are interested in seeing through to the end. This is one of those movies, from start to finish.

I'm not sure I can even begin to recall all the intracacies of this movie, but I think I can come up with a synapsis that will suit: there is a movie star who wants to further her career and will do anyon- er, anything to do so. She even has a man arrested in her place just to make sure that she can continue down the path her life is taking. When war comes to the country, it ruins not only her plans, but those of everyone else in the wake of the nazis. It also frees the man who was jailed for her crime.

It is from this simple story that a more complicated one develops. Other characters parade in, coming in from situation and circumstance in a way that is believable and interesting. The wrongfully jailed man makes a new friend from prison. These two make a friend of a woman on a train. This woman has a friend who is a professor...there are so many people in this movie that it is sometimes hard to keep track of who is what to whom. That is a good thing though. Too many times American movies have dumbed down their stories and trimmed down their roster just to pander to audiences with short attention spans. This movie, perhaps since it is a French movie, does not do that, and keeps the course of all those involved, and does so in an interesting way. It is fun to see the characters interact. It is even more fun to see the conflict in the story build itself up and then be resolved. We care for the characters, we know their motivations, know their limitations, know them as well as we can in the runtime of the film.

Bottom line: great fun to watch, a must rent.
