Just Dead

It's tough to make a film with only a few characters and a small space like a boat, yet we have such a truly great film as "Lifeboat" (the 1944 classic from Hitchcock), so you know it can be done. Well, Dead Calm fails on all points. The story is dumb (why would you try to kill a homocidal maniac with a shotgun and then a spear gun, and once you've knocked him out, not follow through and kill him), the acting is poor (and I usually love Billy Zane), and the photography is so mundane you never get the claustrophobic atmosphere of the small boat. |
