Notice the camera closeups - you are placed in the scene and feel the emotions, the life-forces. Omar is superb - he is believable in every role: mentor, philosopher, father-figure.The boy's demeanor with his life's worries is heart-rending. Inspired cinematography, a compelling visit to another world, a mini-travelogue, a lesson of history, gives the viewer a superb story all around. Ignore the narrow-minded/paranoid comments about anti-semitism. There is none. Substitute Muslim/Christian or any other combination of religions and the story would not be significantly different. These are human characters with deeply human emotions. There are no derogatory overtones. If you don't like French subtitles then you may not like the movie but you would be missing a visually and emotionally powerful experience. Go see it and talk about it with your family and friends. |
