A recycled effort that's not as great as the first

Another year, another diary, we learn in the opening moments of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, the second and hopefully last of the series. Instead of another charming and funny movie like the original, we're treated to a less funny retread of the first, with the same characters pretty much doing the same thing they did before. Even the Christmas party beginning of the original is recycled here.

This time around though, we learn that Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) and Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) have been dating for several weeks and initially everything is well. But no sooner is Bridget contemplating marriage than she quickly suspects something is amiss in the relationship, when Darcy is spending a lot of time seemingly alone with a beautiful female colleague. Mishaps ensue.

Renee Zellweger is certainly likable here, and she's again mastered a British accent, and for the art of her craft, she's gained weight for the role, which oddly seems to noticeably fluctuate during the course of the movie. But the story is the real problem. We go from romantic bliss, to comic misfortune, to physical comedy, to an out of place dramatic prison moment, back to comic misfortune and... well, you'll have to see if for yourself. What were they thinking when they came up with the plot? Was this sequel truly necessary? And was it necessary to place her in prison?

Quite frankly the best moments in the film, happen when Daniel Clever (Hugh Grant) is on screen. And for some reason, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth have more chemistry together than anyone else in the movie. I would have preferred more of their antics, and less of Bridget and her friends.

While it's certainly not a bad film, it's not anywhere near an enjoyable as the first.
