This is the type I call "urban-noir", mainstream critics gave it very depressing. Never Die Alone stars DMX as King David, a dead drug kingpin after seeking redemption in his hometown, but to his voilent end. When a white journalist Paul (David Arquette) find David killed, found recorded audio tapes of his trials and tribulations including love, women, and drugs that changed it all. Unknowingly while chonicling his evidence, but followed by David's allies turned killers tracking him down in the bloody cycle of payback and retribution in the ominous, urban night. DMX's character King David's actions were split persona: Preacher/Satan, and flashbacks were effecting with the women he knew, the deals he made, and violence he made and experienced have spawned to form a full circle as he suspected. David's life had an impact on Paul. Directed by former Spike Lee protege Ernest Dickerson, the look of the film shot in the 16mm to make it complex to match the feel. Some people said that DMX's acting skills were too gloomy on his past roles, but to his fans, DMX love to act on screen were brilliant. David Arquette (the hubby of the famous Courtney Cox) plays the Good Samaritan who researched on the main character's life while quite good. And Barbershop's Michael Ealy is in-your-face and serious hoodlum who is involved and has blood-ties with DMX's character. Based on the best-selling paperback novel by the late Donald Goines. Although I never read the book, but the film adaption is gritty, stylish hard boiled is thrilling for DMX's dark hero character. Never Die Alone is quite disapointing for film critics alike, but the lovers of the urban-noir will know the difference.
