Ernest Dickerson's "Never Die Alone" tells the story (which is based on the novel by Donald Goines) of drug kingpin King David (rap superstar DMX) who has returned home to pay off his debt to former supplier (and even bigger kingpin) Moon (Clifton Powell). At the collection, things go very wrong, and King David is run to the hospital by white writer (I say that because its implied that seeing a white person in this part of town is a strange occurence) Paul (David Arquette). King David later dies at the hospital, and inexplicably leaves all of his possessions to Paul. While searching King David's car, Paul comes across a group of tapes that King David made narrating the story of his life. Paul begins going through the tapes to find out the story (which will help him write the story he was working on) on King David. The movie continues from there, as we find out about King David's life of schmoosing and drug dealing in Los Angeles. The ending is nicely put together and excellent acting performances (particularly by DMX, who brings King David to life, and by Michael Ealy as the vengeful Mike. "Never Die Alone" also marks a rebound for distributor Fox Searchlight Pictures, who after the mega-bomb "Club Dread" has again released an intelligent movie that should play very well in selected markets. Catch "Never Die Alone" while its still playing near you. (3.5 stars) (Reviewed 3/27 in Erie @ Cinemark Tinsletown 17- House 15)
