My first suggestion is to read the book to your child before seeing the film. If your child doesn't like the book, they won't like the film.
I have been reading this book to my fourth and fifth grade students for the past 3 years, and they have loved it!!!!
It's always difficult to put a book into film, but I think they did a pretty good job here. Perhaps Tom Hanks as the father could have made the film even better.
I believe it's a book/film that's meant to speak to you, rather than to purely entertain. Thus, all the "BORING" reviews. In this age of "The Simpsons," "South Park," or even "Spongebob," it's hard to keep our children focused on a story that teaches. I am shocked at what our kids are exposed to these days. Sometimes when we discuss serious issues in class, I see a cartoon running in some of my students' minds instead of reality.
Unlike most films nowadays, it's one that I could bring my kids to without any reservations. |
