I've been reading some of the reviews on here it's apparent to me that there aren't a lot of open minded people out there. Let me try to explain..
I'm a 31 year old male who grew up watching this show. Sure, this movie is nothing like the show was...not even close. Did you expect that? Seriously? With Sean William Scott and Johnny Knoxville? Listen people, IT WASN'T MEANT TO BE JUST LIKE THE ORIGINAL!! It's Hollywood doing what they do best...make money. Whether I had liked the movie or not, they got me for $8.50, just like the ton of teenagers that were there, and the 40 and overs, and the guys with their 8, 9, and 10 yr. old sons, and the other 30 somethings that grew up on it like I did. Hollywood couldn't have done this without Scott, Knoxville, or Simpson because they are what brought in the teenagers that were there...that don't even know who the hell the Dukes were. And I would say that Burt and Willie were in there for the older crowd who would know who they were and that were seeing the movie because it's "the Dukes". And I could care less that none of them are good actors or actresses. Hell, I love most of Burt Reynolds' movies but let's face it...he can't act. But it doesn't take an oscar winning actor to make you laugh, or throw a punch, or drive a fast car...much like the original show. And I could care less that this wasn't as wholesome and family oriented like the show was. That idea probably wouldn't have broke even at the box-office. I mean, we saw how well the reunion movies that were made for TV did... not very good. So Hollywood spiced it up for the next generation. Hopefully, this movie will be to my 5 year old son what Smokey and the Bandit is for me. I was too young to see it when it came out, but it's one of my all-time favorites....as much as it is every red-blooded American male. Somebody having fun, driving fast, getting back at the law, getting the girl, doing stuff that we'll never do.
But you know what? The whole theater was laughing at the comedy, and ooooing and ahhhing at the stunts. Personally, it was the first time I had seen Knoxville in anything and he cracked me up. Good actor? No. Scott cracked me up too, but still no Oscar for his performance either. And Simpson? Well she was just as good at playing Daisy as Catherine Bach was. But when the movie was over, everyone walked out laughing and going on about the crashes and the chases. No one was saying the plot sucked, or the story was lame...they knew it would be, just like I did.
If you want to see an Oscar winner, don't watch this. If you want to see some fun car chases and crashes, laugh at a couple of funny young actors, or just sit back with your friends and a good time.....then I highly recommend it! |
