There were things in the movie that were great like George was so completely adorable. They did a fantastic job portraying the George from the book. What I didn't like was that they changed the story of how George and the man with the yellow hat meet and go back to New York together. The man wanted to bring him home with him. This change in the movie was a monumental mistake as far as little children are concerned. Most little kids who know the stories and are the major portion of the audience will leave this movie confused about the stability of the relationship between child and caregiver. Most kids relate to George; they see themselves as George in these stories. What works in the books is that the man with the yellow hat WANTED to bring George home. When George gets into trouble the man unconditionally loves him and takes care of helping him out of trouble. In the movie, George sneaks onto the boat and surprises the man. At times the man is trying to get rid of him and even calls Animal Control who comes and picks him up and ships him back to Africa in a dark, scary ship. I heard a little boy in the audience begin to cry at this point. This is very unsettling to little kids to see themselves in this monkey not being loved and taken back. The great message in the books to a child is you are wanted and loved and if you do something bad I will still love you and take care of you. This is not the message of this movie. It was a big mistake to change it. |
