First impression: to stand in a queue of the movieplex, I haden't been in a long line like this since... yes! 1976! trying to get a nice seat to see King Kong in colour!.
And yes, finally we get there, safety belts on!. First we start with a lame beginning: even with a magnificent work to recreate the NY of 1933, do we really need this long introduction? I do not think provides sufficient insight of the story to justify the time and the expenditure... We need to arrive to the island to enjoy a fistfull of outstanding imaginery and action secuences, more than enjoyable!, but also a little vacuum (best of the pack, the T-Rex long fight!). And after a pair of plot holes (how the hell Driscoll arrives to Kong home so fast to rescue Ann?, how they are able to put the big monkey in the boat to send it to NY? etc), the final NY scenario, including a 'Bambi on ice' risible sequence).
When all is sadly over, you finish with a strange taste in your mouth... the movie was very well done, Watts performace good, nice score and impecable special effects but... my heart was touched when I saw the first 1933 Kong, but not this time. |
