The concept at the core of the story, is clever. It expands on the ALiens Predator stories uniting them and writing them into meso-american Mythology and legend. Cool idea that succeeds to keep the film out of the distbin of pointless sequels, but may signal an even better ALiens vs. Predator in the future.
WHat usully bothers me about high budget fiolms today is that they lack the epic quality of the great films in the past and the frights in the scray movies are just too commonplace nowadays to carry a story.
In terms of scariness the film fails to move the adult horror movie urge where "Alien" succeeded. It fails to be as epic and complex as "Aliens," In terms of carrying on the "Alien" tradition, it surprisingly does succeed in a backstory kind of way and this, with a new heroine, who clearly could have been more developed and given more depth.
The film is too short, the character storylines, are far too throwaway, yet the mood is there and the visuals are excellent. The action is just too routine and predictable.
There are some moments in the film that redeem the entire effort. These scenes are brief but demand for me a second viewing. It is both high concept sci-fi in the Alien tradition and formulaic in the the modern day, vapid, Hollywood sequel tradition. The real Alien vs. Predator, is the clear vision of the filmaker, the artist, battling with the Corporate Predators who insist on sticking to a formula.
This film doesnt't need sequels yet, it needs more prequels, to further explore the history of the Predator/Aliens/Humans relationship.
I'll give it a "B" just for the concept and the visuals. |
