It is now time to forget the first four Batman and erase from our memory: Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney as Batman.
The 21st century welcomes Christian Bale as the newest Batman and he have done a marvelous job in portraying Bruce Wayne in the big screen. Even though this was his breakthrough career it could also paved the way for future sequels and cement the Batman franchise in the future.
Liam Neeson as Ducard reminds me of Qui-Gon Jinn is Episode I. It epitomes a mentor-apprentice relationship and highlight the true origin of Batman. Even though in the comic books he never have any relationship with Ra's Al Ghul.
Ken Watanabe of the Last Samurai portrays what the character was intended to for Ra's Al Ghul. In the comic books Ra was not Asian but more middle eastern descent. A wonderful performance and makes you believe that he is not a villain, but a person with different ideology.
Cillian Murphy as Scarecrow raised the eyebrows of comic fans. Prof Jonathan Crane actually reminds me of Michael Caine. Oops probably just the name. Seriously, Cillian is not scary enough to Scarecrow, but overall he did an ok job.
Gary Oldman as James Gordon (in the movie he was still a lieutenant, but in the comicbook he is well known as Commissioner Gordon.) Oldman was really superb in every cent they paid him, unfortunately he needs more screen time to truly appreciate him.
Morgan Freeman as Lucious Fox, the head of Wayne Enterprises for product development was in fact the President of Wayne Enterprises in the comic book. Its really unfair to have two great actors in Freeman and Oldman to portray this roles.
Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth is not really that good even if Caine showcased a classic English butler but it still reminds you of the previous Alfred.
Katie Holmes as... Tom Cruise's wife should have been deleted from the scene. Oh yeah its a Hollywood Movie and you need a damsel in distress and Leading Lady for Batman/Bruce Wayne. From Kim Basinger to Nicole Kidman makes Katie Holmes looks really young. (and I am not talking about her relationship with Cruise but in terms of the movie)
The Story was actually based on Batman Year 1 and really set upon on the dark moody setting of Gotham City. Tim Burton's may have nailed the same mood but Christopher Nolan has really made it a masterpiece. I am sure lots of people would complain that it was too dark and not as colorful as the previous one but in reality speaking that won't be Batman.
The Batmobile looks more like a tank than a car, but the purpose was to make it useful in all areas of battle and not a vehicle to impress a girl. "Its the car rights chicks dig the car"
Overall this is for mature audiences who appreciates Batman more as a vigilante that fights crime rather than someone who wears a costume. Children should probably watched Fantastic Four, since I deemed the movie not suitable for them. They may like it but I saw some children crying in the cinema who didnt understand the movie. Best advice to leave them at home and enjoy the movie at your disposal. |
