If you are a fan of Johnny Depp, you should probably see this film. If your not a fan of his -- don't. Secret Window is a mediocre story which, in turn, makes for a mediocre movie. There is really nothing wrong with this film, but unfortunately, there's nothing overly amazing or memorable about it either.
The promotion for it might be a little deceiving in that you should expect anything of a supernatural origin in this movie. There is nothing unexplainable going on except for why this wasn't a made-for-TV movie with a different lead actor. Johnny Depp brings more to the main character than what is really needed or deserved. Personality-wise, Mort is just not overly dynamic. Depp and his quality performance are the only things that keep Secret Window from being a movie-of-the-week on a major television network.
Secret Window's plot was just not overly interesting. Basically, a southern fellow arrives a Depp's doorstep claiming that Depp's character had plagiarized his story and he demanded that he basically fix the problem -- or else. Fascinating stuff. I will admit that you probably will not be able to figure out the ending (as long as you are unfamiliar with Stephen King's story, of course), but you might sigh with slight disappointment when all is revealed. I noticed that other fellow movie-goers vocally exited the theatre with more questions than answers. It wasn't overly complex to really grasp, it just was kinda weird. Stephen King's endings do often have a weird and yet memorable twist to them, but this one just seems to only cover the weird aspect.
I don't think Secret Window is a bad movie by any stretch. If there is nothing better out there to see, you will probably find yourself entertained enough to walk away feeling satisfied. As a fan of Johnny Depp, I would say that this was not one of his most memorable movies, but it's nothing he should be embarrassed about. If you keep your expectations in check, you should be ok with Secret Window. |
