My two children and I left the theater smiling ear-to-ear. This movie is delightful!
In the city (Sydney), Danny is a nobody, or as his grasping girlfriend says, "one of the little people." But after his balloon experiment transports him to Clarence (in a very funny sequence as he floats over Sydney, into a thunderstorm and eventually into the middle of a fireworks show), he is transformed into a good-looking, charismatic leading man. Why? Because he is free to be himself. He literally dropped out of the sky, so no one has any expectations of him.
It is implausible that Glenda should be the town spinster, since she is beautiful and irresistible. But that poetic license aside, this movie explores three related themes: discovering one's true self, forming relationships with other people based on that true self, and finding one's true love.
And it is very funny, with farcical situations throughout. Float over to your local indie theater and give it a look! |
