My primary reason for seeing this film was curiosity. I just had to see what many have proclaimed to be the worst American film... Ever!
I can see how people would be pissed at Gallo for making such a film and I can see how it could come off to many as egotistical and self-indulgent. But the fact of the matter is that everything in this film has its place. That is the mark of a disciplined filmmaker.
This is one of those films where you have to see it through to the very end. Those two patrons who walked out of the screening I was at missed the best part of this film... And no, it wasn't the ***** per se... It was the underlying emotion of the entire "*****" scene which, I thought, was very powerful.
In order to know this movie, you need to first trust Gallo and his storytelling. The first hour of this film is very trying to the patience. But if you can just revel in the film's imagery and collect the emotional/character clues that are strategically placed throughout the film, you just might see what it's all really about.
Granted, it's not the greatest film ever made. But it is the singular vision of an uncompromising filmmaker. |
