Love of the books doesn't justify top movie grades

The C.S. Lewis novels are a fantastic piece of work, but love of the books doesn't justify blind praise for the movie. In fact, just the opposite is true. These quality novels demand quality production in the movie, and this effort just fell flat.
The story is there, and is still great. But, the world of Narnia lacked any depth. Sadly, the characters in the movie had to "tell" us how expansive the world was. Few reviewers seem to have caught that. Ironic. The world seems the opposite of vast, awe-inspiring, magical. Rather, it seems horribly small, creepy, and fairly mundane.
Am I the only one who found the first scene with Lucy and Tumnus very eery? Maybe it's a sad commentary on the perspective of our times, but to me, Tumnus had vibes of a child predator, not a genuine fellow torn between right and wrong.
Beyond that, the acting and visuals were servicable, at best. Compared to movies of a decade ago, the effects were incredible. But, it's not like we aren't starting to see quality computer animations in regular TV.
With works like the LoTR having raised the bar, I find this movie a disappointment. The story was the only thing that carried the movie, which is such a shame. The acting, directing, and overall backdrop of the movie did nothing to propel the story. At most, they served to competantly allow the movie to be told.
Such an un-ambitious way to treat such a rich story. Based upon the story alone, it's better than most the junk produced in Hollywood for 2005. Definately worth seeing. But, how can you not walk away a little disappointed? |
