Wow, I had no idea if I would like or dislike this movie. People who read the book its based on seem to dislike it, while fans of the director love it for his vision and Studio Ghbli's outstanding animation job. My wife and I both throughly enjoyed seeing this film at the theater today and I'm surprised it is in such a limited release. As stated the animation is breathtaking in it's beautiful scenery and attention to detail while maintaining a nature cartoon feel without the CGI. The story is sweet and once again stars a female taken out of her everyday routine and into a magical world of friendship and potential tragedy. The American voice actors did an outstanding job as they have on all of Disney's translations of Miyazaki films. Overall this film isn't as spectacular as Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke, but does rank up there with Kiki's Delivery Service and Castle in the Sky. |
