The original trailer for this film sent shivers up and down my spine. I was on the edge of my seat every time I saw a preview for this film or heard anything about it. The plot seemed disturbing and the trailers hinted at something super-natural in nature. Well, the plot was disturbing and there was a super-natural element, but oddly enough, it wasn't enough to make this film good.

The storyline is very delicate so I am going to be broad in my description of the plot. The film basically follows Telly Paretta (Julianne Moore) as a mother who is still grieving the loss of her child after a year. Her husband (Anthony Edwards) and psychologist (Gary Sinise) urge her to get over the death and move on with her life. Items relating to the child begin to disappear and Telly begins to believe there is more to her son's death then she originally thought. She begins to act on her suspicions and ends up teaming with Ash (Dominic West) whose child also recently died. Her investigation leads her into a bizarre series of events that don't shock the viewer as much as they should. For some reason, the people in the film do not react in ways that normal people would. The film takes on an unrealistic tone as normal everyday people calmly witness things that would send most of us running down the street screaming bloody murder.

The acting isn't bad, Moore does a great job of convincing us that she is suffering terribly from the loss of her son and the supporting cast is solid as well. The biggest problem for me is that the cast simply reacts in ways that make no sense. I believe the film is written that way so it's hard to hold the actor's responsible for their absurd behaviors.

This is not a bad film; I just expected a lot more from the trailer. If you are looking for a good super-natural style thriller then I would recommend skipping this and renting The Sixth Sense or the heavily underrated Stir of Echoes.
