help!!! what evil force got into the minds of these people who sing this movie's praises and wiped away their memories of the movie they actually watched much like what seems to have happened to much of the characters in "the forgotten?" (and no, i didn't give anything away - this is the impression you get watching the commercials.)
let me start with this: save your $8.50 - if you saw the preview, you saw the movie (except that the preview actually looked quite promising). the director took an interesting premise and took it NOWHERE! after watching the movie for twenty minutes, the writing and directing styles were so blatantly obvious (redundant?) and pathetic i can honestly say that i whispered every remaining line of the movie to my friend next to me before the actors had a chance to. what really got to me was how the director, making a movie that clearly hates its audience and considers them mindless twits, tries to convince himself and us that he made an artsy "indie-like" film by jumping on this new hand-held shaky camerawork trend bandwagon and by taking meaningless bird's- eye shots throughout the movie. anyways, after looking at my watch for what must have been the seventy fourth time, i was holding my breath in anticipation for the inevitable amazing ending that would warrant the shooting of the first hour and twenty minutes of c**p, but, alas, it never came.
this movie, however, is not without its merits. moore, though not used as effectively as in some of her other works, is still enjoyable to watch, and this guy from "the wire" ain't too bad either. and although sinise is in about five minutes of the film, his acting is still a pleasure to watch. another (not quite) redeeming factor is horner's haunting music, which is really tricky and mean because during the opening credits it leads you to believe you're actually going to watch a great movie. and even the director did a good job on two scenes: the crash and the calling of the cops (you'll know what i'm talking about after watching the movie - WHICH YOU SHOULDN'T DO!). and i really can't say i didn't enjoy myself laughing with my friend throughout at the movie's patheticism (no, don't run for your dictionary - it's not a word).
i apologize for the incohesiveness of this review but this movie is so flawed on so many different levels i didn't know where to begin! perhaps the eloquent, well-educated guy sitting behind me said it best as the closing credits began rolling: "that s**t was gay, yo!" i truly hope that come next week this movie will become all but...you guessed it, forgotten. */****.
