Well, fans....this review is coming from someone that actually watched them film the original back in suburban Pittsburgh in 1978.....so I may be a tad biased to the original. I rarely find remakes that can hold a candle to the original, and this is no exception! This film is a remake of the original classic...only in the fact that it centers on our actors holing up inside a mall...outside of that it differs greatly! It appears that they only used like 5% of the mall where in the original the mall played a very pivotal role in the movie....the zombies in this movie NEVER get in to the mall except at the end...and any "dead" fan knows that zombies are not "track stars"..I think it looks ridiculous to see zombies running like olympians....let "28 Days Later" do that not here...Some of the special effects were ok...but much better in the original 25 yrs prior...at least they had a cameo by Tom Savini who "dead" fans know well. All in all the movie wasnt bad...the pacing was decent and they had a few good lines especially the "celebrity pick off" that was entertaining...but do urself a favor and rent the original first..then compare...as a true horror classic..the original far surpasses this slightly above remake both in the scare quotient and the effects quotient...this film was strictly intended for the younger audience and it may succeed there....but for us "veterans" of horror classics....Ill stick with the original!!! |
