I had taken my son to this film as a slice of Americana. It delivered the goods. It opened with gas lines and sound bites from the cold war era. By the end, the USA had beat Russia (in hockey), the audience clapped and cheered and my son was pumping his fist. The real story was that Herb Brooks did not want the attention for his team wrapped up in the cold war, he just knew a system that could beat the Russians and he wanted to prove it to himself. Did the story need to be re-told 24 years later? That is another debate... We have come to expect these feel-good stories from Disney, the Rookie for example. If you want something dark go see Gothica… |
