This film is incredible. The hockey scenes are perfect matches to their 24 year old counterparts. It is important to me as such a huge fan of the 80 U.S. Team that the producers and directors took the time to make those scenes accurate with what really took place. In addition I found the acting ability of the hockey players in the film to be terrific and I believe Kurt Russell gave the finest performance of his career as Herb Brooks.
I was 10 years old when the U.S. beat the Soviets in the 1980 Olympics. I remember it like it was yesterday. As a hockey player in a midwestern youth league I remember going to practice and dreaming of one day playing hockey for the USA, of being Mark Johnson or Mike Eruzione and scoring the game winning goal. To a 10 year old in love with hockey there could not have been a better distraction to the ills of those times. This film made me feel like I was that little boy all over again.
The politics and world events of 1979-80 were a huge reason why winning this game was so important to our country. We needed a win badly, The Soviets had invaded Afghanistan and Americans we're held hostage in Iran. Gas prices were skyrocketing out of control and the economy was in the tank. Today, we have invaded Afghanistan and Iraq and are holding hostages of our own in Guantanamo Bay. Gas prices seem higher every week and once again the economy is in the tank (maybe halfway out at this point). I can't help but feel things have come full circle.
Maybe we can put an end to terror and the need to be at war in the mideast. Maybe we can get our economy to bounce out of this funk. Maybe gas prices will start to fall soon and stay down. Maybe, just maybe, after seeing this film, we can all say right along with Al Michaels, "Do you believe in miracles? ... YES!" |
