Cue Cards and Cliches
by William (movies profile)

I actually enjoyed the first three minutes of this film when Helen Lesnick, lead actor/screenwriter/director, invited those in the audience who may be offended by a gay themed movie to leave the theater. After a few delightfully uncomfortable moments she says, "Good. I'm glad they left. They were FREAKING ME OUT!" I thought I was in for a treat.
I was wrong.
A couple of cutesy scenes (the interrogation by ex girlfriends and the stereotypical Jewish-Mom-in-the-kitchen bit) were not enough to overcome the wretched, cliche-filled writing and the dreadful performances of some of the supporting cast.
Suzanne Westenhoefer may be funny behind a mike but she butchered the straight sister in law character. There were several other offenders in the bad acting category but the pain is still too fresh, too real, for me to recount it. If you watch this movie and make it to the Seder dinner scene, remember that many others have endured this movie and have gone on to lead happy, productive lives.
Look, I'm all for the LGBT gang putting out shows that rightfully portray them as having loving (or screwed up) relationships just like the rest of us. But please, get some editorial help and hire a few more actors on the next project. |
