Depending on where you read professional reviews of this movie, you will find it rated from very good to downright terrible. I can only offer my review based on being a 26 year old male who grew up to movies like Risky Business, The Breakfast Club, and Sixteen Candles. And for someone like me, this was an enjoyable night at the movies.
No one should go into this film expecting oscar worthy acting or spine-tingling drama. This movie is just good fun and is meant to be taken as such.
The movie follows Matthew (played by Emile Hirsch)as he approaches high school graduation. Like the cliched role in many teen movies, Matthew plays the smart-kid, class president, average kid who comes to the realization that despite all the awards and accolades, he has nothing good to write in the yearbook under the section "what i'll remember most about high school...".
Cue the entry of Danielle (Elisha Cuthbert) into his life as the seductress niece of his neighbor who will be housesitting for a few weeks. Danielle is an ex-porn star who is trying to escape that lifestyle and return back to a normal suburban setting. Matthew soon discovers Danielle's past and in anger, ends up degrading her. A large part of the movie is then spent following Matthew as he tries to prove his true feelings to Danielle. This may be the one negative I have to say about the movie. Danielle is obviously gorgeous but the film never really does make a true connection between the pair besides for Danielle's exterior beauty and Matthew representing everything that her past is not. But overlooking that, the movie is entertaining and funny. Add in great supporting performances by James Remar and Paul Dano, as Matthew's best friends, and especially Timothy Olyphant, as the Producer trying to lure Danielle back into the adult film business, and you have just what the doctor ordered: a feel-good throwback movie that will have you leaving the theatre with a smile on your face.
