The incredible depth of this film, presenting one event which brings life for one character, overwhelming loss for another, and guilt so overpowering that the third refuses to allow himself redemption, touched me in such a strong and personal manner that I would have to call it the most human of all the motion pictures I have seen in nearly sixty years. Each character has a second chance at life only to see it taken away, yet the film so well captures the tragedy and loss that all humans experience that it is almost irrelevant that the characters have a common theme.
I was not surprised by excellent performances from the two male actors. We've seen both Penn and Del Toro demonstrate superb ability before. Ms. Watts was surprisingly only in that I had not scene her in such a demanding role before. I hope that Hollywood understands that she is both a pretty face and a marvelous talent.
Much has been said about both Penn and Watt's characters, but let us not forget the heartbreak of Del Toro's Jack. A recovering alcholic ex-con who experiences the joys of trying to live a decent life, only to be destroyed by an accident for which he was technically at fault. You get the feeling that his guilt is so strong that he believes death would be too good for him.
The story is told in flashes without chronological order, the same way to we get to know people, they tell us a story about their childhood, we share experiences, they tell other tales about their lives and after awhile the personality is revealed.
