Bart Freundlich's "Catch That Kid" is another example of a movie that is fun for the entire family, which means no one will see it. Aspects of the plot have been significantly overblown by the mainstream media. Yes, the plot does involve a team of 13-year olds (led by promising young actress Kirsten Stewart in another good performace) plotting together to rob a bank. However, watching the plot unfold is not going to convince any child that robbing a bank is okay. Yes, Stewart's character does minipulate both of her male friends in a "romantic" way. However, if you think this doesn't happen in junior high school maybe you ought to drive over to one and take a look. If you think that the worst thing a child could see 13-year old kids doing is minipulating one to convince another to help her steal money to help a beloved ailing father, try watching "Thirteen". Coincidentally released by another company of the same distributor, that film will be a wake up call for you if you think your children will learn bad behavior off of this film. "Catch That Kid" is a family film, with a plot both simple enough for children of any age to follow, and advanced enough for parents to be involved throughout (even through the slightly less believable scenes at the end of the film). Pack up the family for a day at the movies and let everybody have some fun. (3.5 stars) (Reviewed 2/7 @ AMC Theatres University 8- Cinema 4) |
