A good summer movie

I just got back from a midnight showing of "I, Robot," and I'm a little dissapointed.
I am not a big Asimov fan, so the fact that the only thing he contributed was the word "robot" and the three laws of "robotics" didn't really make me mad.
I think Will Smith is a fine actor and I've liked him in all his other big dumb summer movies, so I have no problem with the acting department in this film.
I really don't care that CGI looks only a few notches better than the average saturday morning cartoon, so the special effects, as artificial as they may have been, still seemed convincing enough for me to sit through the movie.
What I DID have a problem with is the story. There is not one scene in this movie that has not been covered in movies past. There was nothing original in the plot, and I had guessed the end of the movie twenty minutes into it. I'm not a genius, I don't usually get the endings right, but this time I did. It was very, very predictable.
Put up against other movies in this genre, it stands out as average. Better than "A.I." but much dumber than "Minority Report," this movie really isn't pure Science-Fiction. It is an action movie set in a future with robots.
All this being said, overall it is a good summer movie. It's loud, big, and stupid. My two cents: it's a good movie to see with your best friend or maybe even your dad. Most people *probably* won't be too dissapointed. Intellectuals beware, however. Don't go to this movie expecting a revelation. |
