This movie surprises me. I saw it with my dad and mom, and my mom thought it was "brilliant", one of the greatest movies she's ever seen, while me and my dad thought it was absolutely horrible. How could two people have two totally opposite opinions on the same movie? I guess "Gothika" really just boils down to a matter of taste. My mom's comment on the movie: "Wow, some movies are all Hollywood and no plot; this, at least, had some intelligence behind it." Contrarily, I thought the focus was entirely on special effects and trying to make it a "gritty, dark" atmosphere, that the plot was trite and repeated, and that the acting was incredibly laughable. (I could only take Halle Barry's incessant screaming at everything from pidgeons to ghosts for so long!) I don't know, the plot just seemed too orchestrated and choreographed, and the acting, overtly exaggerated. And I've never actually before laughed at a movie which wasn't supposed to be funny, but this had me howling. The rest of the audience was quite in a stir as well, especially when Halle Barry's being beaten up by the invisible ghost, and being flung back and forth across her cell at lightning-fast speeds. That incurred more than just a couple chuckles.
Walking out of the theatre, one person's comment was "That movie was horrible, especially with that Caribbean guy!", while another's was "Wow, that was really good; really scary!". Case in point: this is one movie where I guess you've really just got to see it for yourself and formulate your own opinion. Take my lackluster ratings of it as no indication. |
